versus two competing Macs

The 'late 2015' 27" iMac 5K has upped its game with an AMD R9 M395X. How much faster is it compared to the previous model's R9 M295X or the 'late 2013' Mac Pro's FirePro D300s?

INSIGHTS
The 'late 2015' iMac 5K's AMD R9 M395X is faster than the previous iMac 5K's M295X, but only incrementally. 

And for a reality check, you can see that the 'late 2013' Quad-Core Mac Pro's dual FirePro D300s combine to beat both mobile GPUs when running a pro app like DaVinci Resolve that fully utilizes both D300s to render blur and noise reduction on the fly. 

What about heat and noise? The M395X runs just as hot as the M295X. Both quickly climb from 45C to over 100C when stressed. And at that temperature, the internal fan is running at the 2300RPM max (versus 1200RPM idle). Ambient room temperature was 21C.

A rough measure of sound level using an iPhone app (dB Meter Pro) positioned under the iMac reported a rise from 48dB to 58dB in both cases.

By contrast, the 'late 2013' Mac Pro's D300s reported a max temperature in the six stress tests ranging from 63 to 75C and the single cooling fan never rose above the 791RPM idle speed. Cooler and quieter than both iMacs, that's why you pay the big bucks for a Mac Pro.

신형 5K 아이맥의 AMD R9 M395X는 이전 모델에 탑재된 M295X 보다 더 빠르다. 그러나 성능이 소폭으로 증가하는데 그쳤다. 다빈치 리졸브 같은 전문가 소프트웨어 영역에선 2013 맥 프로의 듀얼 파이어 프로 D300가 두 모바일 GPU 보다 훨씬 나은 성능을 보여준다.

발열과 노이즈는 어떤가? M395X는 M295X만큼 뜨겁게 동작한다. 두 칩 모두 부하가 가해지면 온도가 45도에서 100도로 빠르게 상승한다. 이 온도에서 내장팬은 최대 2300RPM으로 돌아간다. (아이들 상태에서는 1200RPM) 

아이폰 앱(dB Meter Pro)으로 측정한 아이맥의 대략적인 소음 수준은 최저 48 데시벨에서 최대 58 데시벨이었다.

대조적으로, 6개의 스트레스 테스트에서 2013 맥 프로 그래픽의 온도는 63도에서 75도로 상승했고, 발열 팬의 속도는 791RPM을 넘지 않았다. 두 아이맥보다 더 차갑고 더 조용하게 돌아간다고 할 수 있는데 괜히 맥 프로를 사느라 많은 비용을 들이는 게 아니다.
